Richard Haines

Richard Haines was born in Panama in 1953. He studied art in Virginia before moving to New York. Having spent twenty-five years working as a fashion designer for the likes of Bill Blass, Perry Ellis and Calvin Klein, in 2008 Haines abandoned the world of prêt-à-porter and began keeping a blog entitled "What I Saw Today", in which he mixes drawings and commentary.
The blog was immediately successful thanks to the input of certain high-profile figures such as Kanye West, who shared some of Haines’s drawings on his own blog, and to sites like Style.com, which dedicated a feature to Haines.
This success was reinforced in 2010 by the advent of Instagram, where Haines is followed by 40,000 subscribers. A darling of the mainstream press, Haines has ended up reporting on fashion shows for the "New York Times" and writing a weekly column for the "Sunday Times" in London. Miuccia Prada asked him to design a project featuring the fashion house’s collections for the Autumn/Winter 2012 season, and Dries van Noten commissioned fabric prints from him for his Spring/Summer 2015 collection.
Influenced by artists such as Toulouse-Lautrec and Christian Béard, Richard Haines’s work has succeeded in bringing the fashion illustration – previously eclipsed by photos – back into fashion.
