The year 1954 saw the appearance of a remarkable character in Belgium's Le Soir and in the pages of the French daily France-Soir. Such was the success of these little stories, in three frames, that before long they began to appear in newspapers worldwide, in more than 40 countries. They were also to be found in Spiro magazine and Tintin over several decades. The silent universe created by Guy Bara (1923-2003) is imbued with a strange kind of poetry that relies solely on its desperately absent-minded protagonist, various truculent animals and a series of absurd situations. Bara's delicate work also serves implicitly to hold up a mirror to modern society.
A themed selection of his best gags has just been published by Éditions Dupuis, in their Patrimoine collection. Marc Breyne and Alain Huberty invite you to discover, or rediscover, original drawings by Bara at their Brussels Gallery, in the Espace Rencontres, from 21 November to 1 December 2018.
