Christophe CHABOUTÉ
Musée

“Inanimate objects, do you have a soul?” asks Raymond Devos, and his question seems like a good way of approaching the new album by Christophe Chabouté.  Musée, just out from Glénat, is a dreamily imaginative work that invites us to ponder what it is to be human. The “museum” of the album’s title is a singular location – a former palace, turned into a train station at the start of the 20th century and today housing Paris’s Musée d'Orsay. Chabouté’s Musée tells the story of the works that hang on its walls from the point of view of their observations of contemporary visitors. The sharply delineated drawings in black and white are the unique hallmark of Christophe Chabouté’s world. On each of these original plates, he inverts the value of one or other, pivoting from white to black as a way of highlighting – in both an actual and a figurative sense – his figures, pushing contrasts to extremes so that nothing is left to chance.
