Presentation

Is it because he is not a Parisian himself that Emmanuel Lemaire is able to bring such a singular gaze to bear on the French capital? Each time Lemaire leaves his home town of Rouen to visit Paris he chooses a new vantage point from which to observe the city. He then frames and reframes his subject, transcribing his vision of the city directly on to paper, often disregarding perspective and letting his drawing take him where it will. We might be on a street corner. Or looking down, from a bird's-eye view. The intention is never to aim for a photographic representation. Lemaire lets his hand dictate what it wants to do, makes no preparatory sketch and rejects any form of academicism in favour of letting the ink itself speak, while occasionally adding a contrasting expanse of colour to enhance the multitude of details he has captured. Every one of Emmanuel Lemaire's drawings is an invitation to see Paris differently.
