LUZ Deux filles nues
Presentation
Deux filles nues is the title of a painting made by the German artist Otto Mueller (1874-1930) in 1919. It is also the title of the book by Luz (published by Albin Michel) which traces the story of that painting and, via the painting, the political history of 20th-century Europe. Through his subjective retelling of the story, Luz invites his readers to see the world from the point of view of the painting and thereby act as silent witnesses to the darkest hours of our collective history. He questions History itself and relays its stuttering responses. And in choosing a work confiscated by the Nazis and displayed in the 1937 exhibition entitled Degenerate Art, Luz also asks questions about the role of art in our society. As Vincent Brunner commented in the French cultural magazine Les Inrocks, "In Luz's ever-expanding bibliography, Deux Filles nues stands out thanks to its use of direct colour, as an original, non-digital technique, where each image appears as if it were a little painting in its own right, and the genre to which it adheres, that of traditional bande dessinée."For this exhibition, which features a selection of original pages from his book, Luz has also produced five large-format drawings in direct colour offering an unusual perspective on how we perceive works of art.
In 2024, Deux filles nues won the Grand Critics Prize awarded by the Association of Comic Strip Critics and Journalists (ACBD) and the Le Point magazine's Wolinski Comic Strip Prize. It was also nominated in two separate categories of the official selection for the 2024 Angoulême International Comics Festival.
