Aude PICAULT Picault en quarantaine

Humour, cynicism and tenderness set the tone for Aude Picault’s first book, Moi Je, published in 2005, and the work which was to follow. In that tortured autobiography, the artist extracted short sketches from her notebooks and presented them as slices of life, emotional snapshots in black and white. Behind a seemingly light-hearted text, the 26-year-old Picault offered her readers that dose of self-derision needed to deal with the trials and tribulations of “adult life”.  Twenty years later, now a fully paid-up member of the grown-ups club, she has brought out Moi je, quarantaine (published in January 2025 in Dargaud’s Charivari collection). The tone may be the same – by turns, gentle, bitter, tender and acerbic – but the drawings are more developed and occupy a larger format. Plates and strips come jostling one after the other as if to replicate the crazy tempo of modern life. Providing a counterpoint to these – and simultaneously a breath of fresh air – are the meditative full-pages that reconnect us with nature. And the drawings in this latest work have been embellished with subtle watercolour, as if to soften the sometimes cruel gaze the artist brings to bear on the events of her daily life.

In the dialogue of plates taken from her latest comic strip or the silence of unpublished still lifes, the graceful, singular lines of her witty pen strokes stretch out. With the elegance of her full and loose strokes, Aude Picault turns away from the “clear line” and its regular, closed outline, to offer us a “vague line”, which undulates to better follow the sinuous course or wanderings of people who doubt. “Picault en quarantaine” is on view from April 30 to May 31, 2025.
