Sandrine MARTIN Jusqu'à se brûler les doigts

From 6 to 21 May, the Huberty & Breyne Gallery in Miromesnil, Paris, is delighted to be hosting a retrospective exhibition dedicated to the work of Sandrine Martin.

In these thirty-four works, taken from her four books, Sandrine Martin exuberantly explores a whole range of techniques using coloured pencil on paper, graphite, Indian ink and biro. The exhibition encompasses her surrealistic drawings, in coloured pencil, for La Montagne de sucre (L’Apocalypse, 2012), inked pages dealing with the transition from adolescence to adulthood in Petites Niaiseuses (Misma, 2015), a handful of vignettes from Niki de Saint-Phalle, le jardin des secrets (Casterman, 2015), and the two-tone images Martin produced for Chez toi (Casterman, 2021).

Sandrine Martin graduated in 2003 from the ENSAD art school, in Paris, where she currently lives and works as a comic book author and illustrator for the press, notably Libération. Chez toi (Casterman) won the Atomium Citizens’ Comic Strip Prize in 2021 and was also selected for the Elle Comic Book Grand Prix, as well as for the Comic Book Prize of the Museum of the History of Immigration in March 2021. Through the portraits of Mona, the Syrian refugee, and Monika, the Greek carer, the album offers a sensitive but powerful retelling of the artist’s involvement in a research project in Athens, in 2016, focusing on pregnant women refugees and migrant maternity care. Chez toi is a thoughtful and serious book that engages with the whole question of identity.
