Do we really have to leave home in order to travel? Isn’t the exotic closer than we might think? And exploring, primarily, a question of looking at things differently? So suggests Christophe Chabouté in his new album Plus loin qu’ailleurs (Éditions Glénat). Plus loin qu’ailleurs is the story of a carpark attendant who is planning the journey of a lifetime – to Alaska. However, a last-minute cancellation and a fall at the airport, which puts him on crutches, takes our hero back to square one. Or almost. Rather than returning home, he books himself into a hotel opposite his flat, resolving  to wander through his own neighbourhood instead. Having wished to explore an uninhabited wilderness, he ends up exploring a place that is equally unfamiliar – what lies in his own backyard.

Christophe Chabouté constructs a narrative of great finesse and poetic resonance, inviting us to reflect on how we all perceive our environment. His original pages – complete with collages and material garnered in the service of the narrative – closely reflect his theme.  Each plate, beautifully drawn in Indian ink, thus forms part of the quest, the adventure that unfolds before our eyes.

Huberty & Breyne is delighted to be showing a selection of forty original pages from Plus loin qu’ailleurs at its Paris | Chapon gallery from 16 May to 14 June.
