The Huberty & Breyne Gallery - a focal point in the world of the Ninth Art - will be showing works at the Art Paris art fair for the fourth consecutive year.
For this 2017 edition focusing on African art, Alain Huberty and Marc Breyne are delving into the underground world of South African comics, showcasing the work of Anton Kannemeyer and Conrad Botes, co-founders of the avant-garde magazine Bitterkomix.
Created in 1992 by these two artists from South Africa's Western Cape province, Bitterkomix is a politically subversive publication that was for a long time subject to censorship. Deliberately provocative and aggressive in tone, the magazine takes a deeply cynical look at the abuses of South African society and the upheavals, such as the abolition of Apartheid, that have rocked the country.
The exhibition looks back over the history of Bitterkomix - now a cult magazine across the whole of Africa - through a selection of bitingly satirical original illustrations, which are displayed alongside more recent work by the artists.
In parallel, Alain Huberty and Marc Breyne are continuing to encourage a conversation between cartoon art and contemporary art by exhibiting a selection of paintings resembling giant cartoon panels - the work of Hervé di Rosa in homage to Franco-Belgian comics. Also on display on stand E24 will be the most recent works by key artists associated with the gallery, such as François Avril, Dominique Corbasson, Jean-Claude Götting, Jacques de Loustal and Miles.
