Presentation

Huldra, the amber goddess, has put a terrible curse on the village that lies by the water, in the shadow of the fiery mountain. All the men have fallen asleep and no one can wake them. How, and why, have the women been spared? This is the mystery that Thorgal must solve if he wants to save his son Jolan, who is suffering the same fate as the others?

With this new album in the Thorgal Saga collection, Christophe Bec and Valérie Mangin have produced a magnificent tribute to the series created by Jean Van Hamme and Grzegorz Rosi?ski. While driven by nostalgia and carefully respecting all the conventions of the genre, this adventure story is also very much a contemporary narrative that deals with issues of our times.
Aesthetically, readers are in for a big surprise. We knew that Christophe Bec was comfortable with contemporary and science fiction settings; in this story, where readers are invited on an immersive historical journey through Scandinavia, we find him equally in his element. Each original page is a masterclass in dynamic composition and the double-page spreads (to mention but them) are breathtaking. What strikes us most forcibly is the exuberance and generosity of Bec?s line work and his skilful mise en scène with its tendency to reduce the human element to its rightful place within the vastness of the natural world.

And, finally, this exhibition offers visitors a unique opportunity to look ?behind the scenes? and discover for themselves all the invisible work ? character research and experiments with page compositions ? that enabled this marvellous book to come into being.
