Nicole CLAVELOUX Ce soir, c'est cauchemar
Presentation
Every image, every composition and every detail in the work of Nicole Claveloux demands our undivided attention. We need, however, to take a step back in order to truly appreciate her work ? in a spirit of occasional humour, but always of seriousness, humour and seriousness being far from contradictory where Claveloux is concerned. This playful artist conjures up magical new universes, each piece of artwork being the fruit of a considered approach that transports the viewer to a different reality, or at the very least shakes up his or her perception of the world. Generations of readers of both genders have grown up with Claveloux?s works ? comics and illustrations appearing for the most part in magazines, but also in publicity materials and on book covers.
While her graphic style aimed at younger audiences is familiar to many, her paintings are less well known, and the splendid exhibition organised to coincide with the 2020 Angoulême International Comics Festival helped bring this aspect of Claveloux's oeuvre to a wider audience. We should also mention the fantastic new edition of her first comic strips brought out by Cornélius at that time and the celebration of her work at the most recent Formula Bula festival in Paris.
This Brussels exhibition focuses specifically on the original pages for Claveloux's last comic album, Ce soir, c'est cauchemar, published in 2024, and showcases the paintings the artist has produced over several decades.
