Agnès HOSTACHE Shimura-san et les autres
Presentation
There is something hard to pin down in the work of Agnès Hostache. We might describe it as tranquil, contemplative, controlled or harmonious; but we would still not have fully grasped its essence. And therein lies its appeal. Hostache?s publisher, Le Lézard Noir, links her work with the Japanese Mingei, or ?folk art?, movement. While it celebrates sobriety and a respect for the traditions of great illustrators of the past, there is nothing conservative about Agnès Hostache?s approach. She succeeds in constructing a unique narrative language while bridging the gap between illustration and comic book. And how can we adequately describe her colours and her perspectives? Whether she is focusing on Japan or on the South of France, Hostache draws on novels that have inspired her, to bring to life two singular universes.
Huberty & Breyne is delighted to be showing, for the first time, a selection of original pages in direct colour taken from Agnès Hostache?s two graphic novels, Nagasaki (ADAGP?s Révélation BD for 2020), based on the novel by Éric Faye (Grand prix du roman de l?académie française), and E.1027, adapted from Célia Houdart?s novel Tout un monde lointain.
