Claire Bretécher is an expert at analysing the minutiae of our daily lives. Through the eyes of her comic strip heroes and heroines, this grande dame of the illustrated press succeeds in pinpointing the foibles and failings of our society.
For the period from the 11th of December 2015 to the 16th of January 2016, the Huberty & Breyne gallery has reassembled Bretécher’s entire universe – from the feminist adventures of “Cellulite”, born in 1969 in Pilote, to the vexations of the “Frustrés” and other pre-pubescent setbacks suffered by “Agrippine”, as published up until 2009 in the Nouvel Obs.
On display are some hundred album plates and press illustrations, as well as a selection of paintings and personal works which bring a new dimension to Bretécher’s oeuvre.
This is a tribute in images which perfectly complements the splendid monographic exhibition devoted to the artist by the BPI at the Centre Georges Pompidou.
