Presentation

From 17 March to 15 April 2023, the Huberty & Breyne | Matignon gallery is delighted to be hosting a solo exhibition devoted to the work of Edmond Baudoin (Nice, 1942), a painter, illustrator, comic book author, poet and inveterate sketcher.

To date, Edmond Baudoin has published more than a hundred comic book albums and a great many illustrated books. His work has been the focus of studies, research, monographs and video documentaries. He has been published in France, Japan and Germany, and his art has reached as far afield as Canada and Latin America.

Baudoin is a fascinating person. Whether he is producing a book of science fiction with Cédric Villani or reporting on the arrival of migrants in the Roya Valley, the artist places his primary focus on the human content of his work. He reaches out to others in a constant bid to establish contact and to initiate an exchange.

To mark the 80th birthday of this great artist, the Huberty & Breyne gallery is delighted to be able to devote an exhibition to Baudoin?s paintings made in France and in Mexico between the end of the 2000s and the start of the 2010s.

Baudoin?s artistic themes vary according to technique and genre, female subjects forming the central theme of his painting. As he says himself, ?depending on my chosen support, I try to challenge myself, to avoid becoming part of a system. In my cartoon work, I try to express a sensitive take on things. When I am in the metro, for example, I might see the other travellers in terms of death?s heads.  In my paintings, I look for less dramatic subjects. I paint women. Women have always fascinated me. They represent absolute otherness. There is nothing stranger than a woman, in my eyes. I endeavour to penetrate her mystery without ever understanding her.?

Baudoin has received a great many awards for his fiction as well as for his autobiographical work. In 2021, he donated over 5,000 drawings to the Comic Strip Museum in Angoulême. Acquiring an artwork by Edmond Baudoin has become a real challenge; but this new exhibition offers viewers an opportunity to do just that.
