After a year’s absence, the Huberty & Breyne gallery is back centre stage for the 2024 edition of the international Art Paris Art Fair with a solo show dedicated to the work of contemporary French artist Gilles Barbier.
Barbier is showing a new series of works entitled Naufrages. Drawing his inspiration from Homer’s Odyssey, that epic journey of initiation, the artist depicts the instability and social and political shipwrecks of our contemporary world. Nature is a burning cause dear to the artist’s heart and central to this series, which features, as a kind of figurehead, an immense beached whale, five metres long. Once again, we see nature through Barbier’s eyes – both breathtaking and desperately vulnerable.
Naufrages is a series of works in acrylic and Posca® on polyester film – an unusual support that allows Barbier to play with the quality of transparency, employing both the back and the front of his medium.
A new series of sculptures in bronze and resin that pick up the theme of the paintings also forms part of the exhibition.
