Presentation

Appollo and Brüno are well known to one another, having worked together on a science fiction story, Biotope, stories about music and, most recently, T’Zée, a re-telling of Phèdre, Jean Racine’s classical tragedy transposed to an imaginary country in Africa. Three years ago, the editor-in-chief of Spirou magazine commissioned the duo to create a short story that would serve as a tribute to Lucky  Luke – an opportunity to offer their personal vision of the famous lone cowboy. Ideas flowed and, one thing leading to another, last October a complete album of individual episodes – Dakota 1880 – appeared from Lucky Comics.

The tribute was a runaway success with public and critics alike. The fact is that Morris’ world, inspired by the sweeping landscapes of North America and Hollywood films from the 1930s, 40s and 50s, is a perfect fit for Brüno. It gives him ample scope to display his instinct for skilful framing and page composition and apply the sharply defined inking style which is his trademark. This exhibition offers viewers a unique opportunity to discover Brüno’s remarkably free approach to composing his comic strips, where each image receives individual treatment but is simultaneously part of a cohesive whole. And because Morris’ world also draws on the 7th art (cinema), another medium dear to the artist, visitors to the Huberty & Breyne, Paris | Matignon gallery will be treated to a series of particularly striking illustrations – illustrations that inspire because they are themselves inspired.
