MIDAM The Snow Must Go On

Since 1996, Kid Paddle’s avatar - the Little Barbarian - has been tirelessly dashing through castles, snow-laden forests, caverns teeming with improbable creatures and landscapes fraught with perils. The goal is always the same: to rescue a princess, discover the exit, or both. But his destiny is written in stone and he fails spectacularly, absurdly, sometimes even with enormous aplomb. In a way, the Little Barbarian's story is an allegory of life itself: we all know it will end badly, but we know neither when nor how.

Doomed to die a thousand times (and be reborn a thousand and one) for the sheer delight of Midam's readers, the Little Barbarian has become one of the most iconic figures in contemporary comic books. With Game Over - a universe he created as an offshoot of Kid Paddle - Midam launched a must-read series developed independently since 2004 with help from his assistant, Adam. A modern take on the myth of Sisyphus, Game Over pays tribute to the influences of Midam's youth, among them Wile E. Coyote and the Road Runner, La Linea, Buster Keaton and the Pink Panther.

To mark the release of the 25th volume of the series, The Snow Must Go On, by Dupuis on 28 August 2026, the Huberty & Breyne's Paris | Chapon - 19 gallery is delighted to be hosting a new exhibition dedicated to this key figure from the world of Franco-Belgian comics. The success of Game Over relies on a narrative mechanism that is as demanding as it is universal. Devoid of dialogue, each story drawssolely on the artwork as a means of guiding the reader, conveying emotion and constructing the narrative. This constraint - which might appear limiting - has, over the course of the albums, become one of the series' greatest strengths. It demonstrates a remarkable mastery of visual language and a keen sense of mise en scène.

This exhibition brings together a collection of original plates from the new album.

The selection reveals the graphic richness of Game  Over, the inventiveness of its scenarios, the precision of its storytelling and the care taken in constructing each sequence - all of which explain the longevity of a series that has become a veritable phenomenon in the world of European comics. 

The Huberty & Breyne gallery invites viewers to immerse themselves in this remarkable universe and to acquaint themselves with the work of an artist who has left a profound mark on the recent history of Franco-Belgian comics.

But that’s not all!

Also on show will be a number of new Blorks - those famous, goofy monsters from the Game Overseries - as they invade and subvert everything in their path... all the way to Japan!

Early evidence to that effect was supplied by the bestselling book Pokeblork, brought out last year by Huberty & Breyne and offering an initial showcase for these bizarre but irresistible monsters. This year, the book - which sold out immediately upon release - is being reissued, while a second volume makes its appearance.

To mark the occasion, the gallery is showing a selection of these original and incredibly playful characters.
