Frank LE GALL Théodore Poussin

From 10 February to 11 March 2023, the Huberty & Breyne | Matignon gallery is delighted to be hosting an exhibition of new work by Frank Le Gall. The gallery will be showing original plates from the 14th volume of Théodore Poussin adventures (Éditions Dupuis) together with a selection of recent oil paintings on canvas.

No natural-born adventurer, Théodore Poussin has nevertheless lived an eventful life and is now island-hopping in the China Seas, accompanied by the ghosts of his earlier escapades. In July 1934, we find him holed up on a tiny island in the vicinity of Singapore, sharing his bed with an enigmatic arms dealer and one-time model named Aro Satoe. He is being hunted by the British and, as their pursuers close in, our curious couple hurriedly quit their cosy, wave-lapped sanctuary and make for the island's wild interior ? a particularly hostile terrain where they attempt to flee in the company of Nana Sahib, a guide with barely more experience than their own.

There are echoes here of Joseph Conrad and Robert Louis Stevenson, but Frank Le Gall continues to turn the classical comic adventure story on its head.

This exhibition devoted to the new album in the cult Franco-Belgian comic series offers viewers the opportunity to admire a collection of pages ? executed in Indian ink, with occasional use of screen tones ? by a subtle artist who is constantly exploring new graphic and narrative possibilities.

Visitors will also be treated to a less well-known facet of Le Gall's work thanks to the display, in the gallery's mezzanine area, of a handful of recent paintings done in oils.
