Fabrice NEAUD Le Dernier Sergent
Presentation
From 10 November to 9 December 2023, Huberty & Breyne is honoured to be hosting an exhibition of original works by Fabrice Neaud, designed to coincide with the publication of Le Dernier Sergent, volume 1 in Neaud’s Les Guerres immobiles series (Éditions Delcourt).
Fabrice Neaud is a key figure in the “independent” comics movement and the creator of a colossal body of autobiographical work. Neaud’s pages analyse and challenge ideas about creativity, love and, above all, the homophobia and sense of insecurity so prevalent in France at the start of the millennium. In a truly remarkable project, the artist – whose award-winning work has been shown in Europe and Japan and, on multiple occasions, provided the focus for university studies – simultaneously references Dürer and Eribon, Bach and Vermeer, Malher, Dustan, Benderson and Proust…
Neaud’s dynamic narratives, his tone, his linguistic dexterity, his philosophical and literary concerns and his drawing style (using pen and Indian ink exclusively) combine to produce a breathtakingly coherent whole, while his – frequently strong – emotions are palpable in every one of his illustrations. The selection of pages on display here is accompanied by a series of drawings – portraits and landscapes – that offer a new perspective on this artist’s work.
