"Philippe Labaune Gallery is pleased to announce Azur, an exhibition of paintings and drawings by French comic artist Jacques de Loustal, opening Thursday, March 14, 2024. On view is a collection of Loustal's work demonstrating his mastery of color as well as his versatility. Well-known for his comic art illustrations and his illustrious New Yorker covers, the artist draws upon the influence of place to create atmospherically bold scenes. Loustal's oil on canvas paintings are stylized, colorful depictions of figures operating in places of adventure, whether that be urban or remote landscapes. Having grown up in Africa, and as an avid traveler, Loustal's work is inspired by his sights around the globe. Throughout his upbringing, the artist always desired to travel to New York, the city being the first destination he could envision himself in. Influenced by New York, as well as the other locations he visited, this collection, Azur, highlights Loustal's ability to use color as a means to reach a hand to his audience and pull them into one of his landscapes..."
